Can you reface a prefab builder-grade fireplace, or only masonry ones?
Both — and in Asheville, which one you've got usually comes down to your neighborhood. A Montford or North Asheville original is solid masonry you can bond stone almost straight onto; a newer South Asheville home has a factory-built metal box that needs a framed non-combustible substrate to carry the weight. Which era of Asheville home are you refacing?
Asheville's housing runs the full range, and the fireplace usually gives away the vintage. The pre-war homes up in Montford, North Asheville, and around Grove Park were built with true masonry fireboxes — a load-bearing brick mass that tile or stacked stone can key into directly. The subdivisions that filled in South Asheville and Biltmore Park lean on zero-clearance units: a listed metal firebox framed into a combustible wall. Both refinish beautifully; they just ask for different prep, and the first thing we do is confirm which one is behind your current surround.
The metal-box job, done to the listing
On a factory-built unit you can't let a slab or heavy stone hang off the steel face — the load rides on backer board fastened to framing built to carry it, set back to the clearances the manufacturer stamped on the unit. Many of these boxes also call for a specific clean-face front or a non-combustible border at the opening, and skipping that is how a good-looking reface turns into a code problem. Get it right and a builder-grade South Asheville box reads as a custom stone wall.
