A cap that has to work on the first try
Maggie Valley's economy runs on cabins and vacation rentals, and those fireplaces sit dark for weeks between guests, then have to light instantly the night somebody checks in. Weeks of idle time is all it takes for a bird or squirrel to build a nest in a flue with a failed screen, or for a corroded cap to seize partway shut — and the guest finds out when the room fills with smoke.
That's the whole case for a pre-season inspection here. Checking the cap, screen, and draft before the rental calendar fills means the first fire of the season behaves, along Soco Road, Jonathan Creek, and out toward Dellwood. It's far better to find a bird's nest in October than to hear about it from a guest in December.

At more than 3,000 feet, Maggie Valley is one of the coldest communities we cover, and it's propane country — no natural-gas mains this high up. The long, hard freeze-thaw seasons chew through galvanized caps quickly, so stainless steel or copper is the only cap really worth installing up here; anything cheaper is a repeat visit waiting to happen, and at this elevation a cap failure often shows up right when the cabin is fullest.
