How do I know if my house has natural gas or propane?
In Mills River, propane is the safe assumption. The rural, large-lot properties spread across the farmland and forest here mostly sit beyond the natural-gas main, so a yard tank is the common sight. Newer developments closer in may reach gas — check for a wall meter. Find the tank or the meter and your fuel is settled.
Big lots, propane tanks
Mills River's character is space — wide properties tucked between farm fields and woods — and the natural-gas main simply doesn't run to most of them. That means propane: a 250- or 500-gallon tank set above ground on a pad, or buried with a green dome lid at grade. Toward Horse Shoe and the newer pockets, a few homes closer to existing lines may have a natural-gas meter, so confirm rather than assume. Tank in the yard, you're propane; meter on the wall, natural gas from the street.
The outdoor-living angle
The open valley here is made for outdoor living, and a lot of Mills River projects are gas fire pits and outdoor fireplaces rather than indoor units. The fuel question is identical outside: a propane run ties into your tank, a natural-gas line extends from the meter, and both are licensed, permitted work. If you're planning to entertain, late spring is the time to have the line run — before the season, not during it — and knowing your fuel shapes the whole layout of pit, line, and appliance.
