How long does it take to build an outdoor fireplace?
An outdoor fireplace is usually a multi-week project rather than a multi-day one, because most of the timeline is masonry — the mason builds the stone structure and chimney, which can run one to two weeks. Our part, the gas line and appliance side or the wood firebox and flue, is a few days folded into that larger schedule.
Most of the clock is masonry
When people picture an outdoor fireplace, they're picturing the stonework — and that stonework is what takes the time. We partner with masons on these builds: Steady Flame handles the technical side, the firebox, the venting, and any gas, while the mason lays the structure and chimney. A substantial stacked-stone outdoor fireplace can take a mason one to two weeks depending on size, weather, and how much stone is going up. Our piece drops into their timeline rather than the other way around, which is why the total is measured in weeks, not days.
Our piece of the build
For a gas outdoor fireplace we run an outdoor-rated, buried gas line — licensed, permitted, and pressure-tested — and set and connect the appliance; that's a few days of our time. For a wood-burning outdoor fireplace we set the firebox and Class A flue and make sure it drafts, which matters more than folks expect up here: our ridges, valleys, and tall trees throw downdrafts, and a short or poorly placed flue will smoke back at you all evening. Either way, our work is only ready once the mason's structure is far enough along to receive it.
Planning around season and weather
Because so much of the work is exposed masonry, spring through early fall is the sweet spot — mortar cures better and rain days don't stall the crew. And in WNC an outdoor fireplace isn't a summer-only luxury; cool mountain evenings keep it useful most of the year. We'll coordinate the mason, the gas, and the inspection so the trades don't trip over each other. Call (828) 545-0525 or request a free quote to start the plan.
