If I start in November, can I convert my wood fireplace to gas logs in time for the holidays?

Usually yes, and Flat Rock's historic homes are ideal candidates. Many date to the 1800s with oversized open masonry fireplaces that pull cold drafts into the room — a conversion fixes that. A vented gas log set keeps the period look and installs fast for the holidays; a sealed insert cures the draft and adds heat but needs more lead time. Start early in November.

Keeping the 1800s look while fixing the 1800s draft

Those big historic fireboxes in Historic Flat Rock and around Highland Lake were built for wood, and a hand-painted Real Fyre vented set sits beautifully in them — you keep the character with none of the hauling or cold-start smoke.

The catch is that an open, vented setup still lets cold air spill down the flue when it's idle. If the draftiness bothers you, a sealed direct-vent insert closes the opening and turns the fireplace into a real heater — that's the longer project, so start it sooner.

Aging clay liners deserve a look first

Many of these homes have original clay flue liners that have cracked or shifted over a century-plus. A vented log set runs with the damper open, so the chimney has to draft cleanly and safely — we check the liner and firebox before setting a date.

If it needs relining, that's a decision to make now, not a December surprise, and it may tip you toward a sealed insert anyway, which brings its own fresh liner.

Henderson County permit and the holidays

The gas line itself is licensed work — a mason restoring the brickwork can't legally connect the fuel, but we can. We pull the Henderson County permit, pressure-test the line, and meet the inspector. Flat Rock's about 30 minutes south of our showroom. Book the free assessment the first week of November. Call (828) 545-0525.
