My gas fireplace pilot is lit but the main burner won't come on — what's wrong?
In Brevard, where 80-plus inches of rain a year keep crawl spaces and chimney chases damp, a lit pilot that won't fire the burner often traces to corrosion in the millivolt circuit as much as to the thermopile itself. A single oxidized wire terminal can drop the tiny voltage below what the valve needs. It's a common, inexpensive Transylvania County fix.
Why moisture is the local twist
The signal that opens your main valve is only a few hundred millivolts — a whisper of electricity — and it has to travel from the thermopile through spade connectors, a wall switch, and sometimes a remote receiver before it reaches the valve. In Brevard's wet climate, with the March-through-June rainy stretch and damp chimney chases, those brass and copper contacts oxidize. Even a lightly corroded terminal or a rusted switch adds enough resistance to strangle the signal, so the pilot stays proved but the burner never fires. Drying it out doesn't fix corrosion; the contacts have to be cleaned or replaced.
The sensor still matters
Corrosion aside, the thermopile is a wear part that slowly makes less voltage as it ages, and eventually it holds the pilot without firing the burner. We read its output with a meter, then check every connection along the way, so we're not guessing. Downtown Brevard homes and the Connestee Falls and Sherwood Forest cabins alike see this. Around these damp chimney chases we also flush moisture from the pilot hood, since a wet orifice can weaken the very flame the thermopile depends on.
