My gas fireplace pilot is lit but the main burner won't come on — what's wrong?
Candler's fast-growing subdivisions are full of newer, basic builder-grade fireboxes, and because those units are young, a lit pilot with a dead burner here leans away from a worn-out thermopile and toward a switch, wiring, or dirty-burner issue. That's good news — the fixes are simple and inexpensive, and we sort them in one Buncombe County visit.
Young units point somewhere other than the sensor
In the new Enka-Candler and Sand Hill developments, most gas fireplaces are only a few years old, so their thermopiles usually haven't worn out yet. When one proves the pilot but won't fire the burner, we look first at the control path — a loose factory wire, a switch that never seated, a remote receiver with a spent battery. We also check the burner ports, since a first-season build can still collect enough dust or a spider's web to keep gas from carrying cleanly from pilot to burner. The thermopile stays on the list, but it's rarely the first culprit on a young unit.
How the signal reaches the valve
It helps to know the chain: the pilot heats the thermopile, which makes a few hundred millivolts, and that current travels through your switch and wiring to open the main valve. Break it anywhere and the pilot stays lit while the burner sleeps. Candler is on the natural-gas main, and Hominy Valley's bowl makes clean-burning sealed units attractive — but this repair is about the circuit, not the fuel. In these new builds we also make sure the vent termination and burner are clear, since a brand-new home can shed construction dust into a firebox through its first winter or two, and that alone can keep the flame from spreading across the burner.
