We're building a new home — what should we rough in now for a future outdoor fire feature?

Many Leicester properties are large, rural, and on propane, and some have limited electrical capacity — both matter for a new build. Rough in a properly sized propane line (or gas-main, if you have one) to the future patio and cap it, and while the electrician's on site, plan the panel and circuits for any ignition or lighting you'll want outdoors.

Two roughed-in systems, not one

On a rural Leicester build, the fuel line is only half the picture. Many outdoor fire features use electronic ignition and low-voltage lighting, and if your property runs a tighter electrical service, it's worth having the electrician rough in those circuits — and confirm panel capacity — while the walls are open and the trencher's on site.

For the fuel itself, most of these large lots are on propane, so size and place a tank for the house plus a future fire pit, grill, and patio heater. If your lot reaches a gas main instead, size the meter to match.

Get the buried line in while it's easy

Leicester's rural valleys drain cold air — clear winter nights run five to eight degrees colder than Asheville — so an outdoor hearth extends the usable season here. Run one generously sized buried line toward the feature, branch it to each spot, and sleeve any slab or drive crossing before landscaping goes in.

The propane or gas connection is licensed work in North Carolina. We handle the fuel side, pull the Buncombe County permit, and pressure-test the line for the inspector.
