What is Dimplex Opti-myst and how does it work?
Opti-myst is Dimplex's water-vapor flame technology — the most realistic electric 'fire' made. An ultrasonic disc turns water from a small reservoir into an ultra-fine, cool mist, and LED lights shine up through it so you see three-dimensional flames and rising smoke, not a flat flicker. You periodically refill the water tank to keep it running.
How the illusion is built
Inside an Opti-myst unit, an ultrasonic transducer vibrates thousands of times per second and atomizes water into a fine fog. LEDs light that fog amber and orange, and because the mist genuinely rises and curls, your eye reads real flame and real smoke lifting off the logs. That's the trick most electric fireplaces can't pull off — theirs is light on a spinning rod; this is actual moving vapor.
The vapor itself is cool, so the 'flames' are safe to touch — a real selling point in homes with kids or pets. The tradeoff is upkeep: there's a water reservoir to refill, and in hard-water areas filtered or distilled water keeps the ultrasonic disc clean.
What it's for — and what it isn't
Opti-myst is ambiance-first, and it's stunning at it. But the mist effect makes no heat on its own — that's a common surprise, and we cover it in the next question. Some Opti-myst products include a separate heater; many are pure flame effect. Buy it for the look, not to warm a room.
It's a beautiful choice for a spot where you want a living flame with zero venting, zero gas, and zero clearances — a mantel, a media wall, a three-season room. If you'd rather have a cleaner, lower-maintenance modern look, the Dimplex IgniteXL LED linear is worth comparing.
You have to see it lit
Photos don't do Opti-myst justice, and neither does a spec sheet. Watch it burning at our Asheville showroom and you'll understand why it's the realism king of electric. Call (828) 545-0525 or visit 629 Emma Rd.
