Where does a propane tank go on a steep mountain lot, and can the delivery truck reach it?
In Black Mountain proper, natural-gas service reaches many homes, but head up into Montreat's steep, heavily wooded lots and you're on propane — and that terrain is exactly where truck access decides tank placement. The tank goes where it clears code setbacks and where a bulk truck can safely reach it, which on these shaded grades usually means near the drive, not down among the trees.
The Montreat problem: getting a truck to it
Montreat's lots are steep and thick with trees, which keeps the houses cool and damp and makes them lean on their hearths — and it makes maneuvering a heavy propane truck genuinely tricky. The driver runs a hose from wherever the truck can park on firm ground, and dense woods, tight switchbacks, and a slick grade all shrink where that is. So the tank goes to the reachable spot first, and we run buried line from there down to the fireplace. Cold-air pooling in the Swannanoa Valley runs mornings here 10 to 15 degrees under Asheville, so these homes get worked hard in winter — one more reason the driver has to be able to get to the tank.
Setbacks and piping
Code clearances from the house, windows, and property line set the outer bounds, scaled to tank size. Within that, we place for access and then run the outdoor-rated line back to the appliance, sized for the distance and pressure. It's permitted through Buncombe County and pressure-tested — standard gas-piping work, done once, done right.
