Where does a propane tank go on a steep mountain lot, and can the delivery truck reach it?
In Canton, where Pigeon River valley flooding has damaged hearths and gas appliances, a propane tank's placement carries an extra rule: keep it and its connections clear of the low, flood-prone ground and easy to inspect. Otherwise the usual logic holds — the tank goes where it meets code setbacks and where the delivery truck's hose can reach, often up off the valley floor.
After the water, inspection comes first
Canton's mill-town homes sit along the Pigeon River, and recent flooding left a lot of water-damaged fireboxes and gas appliances in its wake. Any propane system that's been through high water — tank, regulator, buried line, appliance connections — needs a careful look and a pressure test before it's trusted again, and that's licensed gas work, not a DIY check. When we're placing a new tank here, we favor higher, reachable ground away from the worst of the flood-prone valley floor, both for safety and so a bulk truck can get to it.
Setbacks and truck reach
Placement still comes down to code clearances from the house, windows, and lot line first; then a spot the delivery driver can reach with a hose from firm parking; then the run back to the fireplace along the buried, outdoor-rated line we install. Valley-floor fog and damp are hard on steel here, so how a tank is set and drained matters as much as where.
The handoff, and the permit
Your propane supplier owns the tank and fills; we own everything from the regulator in, including the Haywood County permit and the inspector — which, after a flood, is exactly the paper trail that protects your home and insurance. Twenty minutes west of our Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525.
