Flat Rock's historic homes, some dating to the 1800s, often have oversized open fireplaces and aging clay flue liners that pull cold drafts into the room. Steady Flame Fireplaces, your authorized Napoleon dealer, seals that up without erasing the character. Our Asheville showroom is a 30-minute drive at 629 Emma Rd; call (828) 545-0525.
A sealed insert saves the room without gutting it
An old open masonry fireplace in a historic Flat Rock home is often a net heat-loser; on a cold night it can pull more warm air up the chimney than it ever returns, and a cracked clay liner only makes the draft worse. Dropping a Napoleon Oakville X4 gas insert (GDIX4N) into that existing opening seals the firebox, stops the cold-air infiltration, and turns it into a real 20,000-BTU heater, while keeping the mantel and surround you'd never want to lose. Around Kanuga and Highland Lake we see these oversized fireboxes constantly, and the sealed-insert fix lets an 1800s parlor finally hold its heat on a cold Henderson County night without losing an ounce of its period character.
Why not just reline the old chimney?
Sometimes relining is the right call, and if you want to keep burning wood we'll say so. But for many of these 1800s flues, a sealed direct-vent or insert setup is simpler, safer, and doesn't depend on a masonry chimney that's already out of spec. Flat Rock has natural gas through much of the village, so a clean Napoleon direct-vent, flame at the flip of a switch, is usually well within reach. We inspect first and give you the honest comparison.
Permitted work protects a historic home's value
Unpermitted gas or hearth work can complicate a future sale and even void insurance, no small thing on a historic property. We pull the Henderson County permit, pressure-test the line, and meet the inspector, all under one accountable company.
