Tight lots and tricky draft
The French Broad gorge brings cool, damp evenings and the kind of terrain that makes venting a real design question; steep hillside homes and multi-story downtown buildings don't always offer a clean chimney path, and downdrafts off the ridges can fight an open fireplace. A sealed Napoleon direct-vent unit is often the answer: it vents out a sidewall or roof through a short coaxial run, no full chimney required, and its sealed combustion isn't at the mercy of a gusty gorge draft the way an open hearth is. Out toward Walnut and the Hot Springs road the lots get even steeper, and we've routed venting on plenty of them; the mountainside is a constraint we plan around, not a reason to talk you out of a fireplace.
Match the unit to a small mountain room
