Who should I call about a suspected gas leak — the gas company or a fireplace technician?

In Brevard, if you smell gas now, call your propane supplier — most cabins out here run LP — or the natural-gas utility in town, or 911, all from outside the house. They shut it off at the tank or meter at no cost. Tracking down and repairing the leak afterward is our work as a licensed gas contractor.

Propane country, so know your supplier's number

Downtown Brevard has some natural gas, but head toward Connestee Falls, Sherwood Forest, or the cabins and you're on propane. Your emergency call goes to whoever owns the fuel: on LP that's your propane supplier, who — like the gas utility — answers around the clock, comes out, sweeps the area, and shuts the tank off free. Get out first, leave the switches alone, and make that call from the driveway. A fireplace company is the wrong first call here; we don't control the supply.

Transylvania's rain is a leak's best friend

Brevard takes 80-plus inches of rain a year, and that moisture works on gas hardware — it rusts dampers, spalls brick, and corrodes the fittings and connectors on a hearth over time, especially in the damp crawl spaces and chimney chases so common here. When a leak turns up on your side of the tank or meter, that's licensed gas-contractor territory under state law. We trace it with an electronic detector, put the full run under test pressure, replace the corroded part, and retest — then pull the Transylvania County permit when the job requires one.

The tank line is yours

On propane, the supplier owns the tank and usually its regulator; the piping running to your fireplace is yours to maintain and repair. That downstream side is exactly where we live. Keep our number, (828) 545-0525, next to your propane supplier's emergency line. Brevard is 40 minutes southwest of our Asheville showroom.
