Why does my fireplace leak water when it rains?

In Waynesville, at nearly 2,650 feet, a fireplace that leaks only when it rains is telling you the chimney's weatherproofing has lost to the freeze-thaw cycle. Up here that cycle runs longer and harder than in Asheville — the crown, cap, flashing, or old mortar has cracked, and mountain storms find the gap. The higher and older the chimney, the worse it gets.

Why altitude makes the leak worse

Waynesville's heating season runs about three weeks longer than Asheville's, and nights sit ten to fifteen degrees colder. Every time water in a crown crack or mortar joint freezes, it expands and pushes the crack wider; thaw, refill, refreeze, and by late winter a hairline that shed rain in fall has become an open channel. This is the mountain chimney's slow death, and it's most advanced on the tall, exposed flues and on the weather-facing side of the house.

Hazelwood's old open hearths are prime suspects

Much of Waynesville's older Hazelwood housing stock was built around big open masonry fireplaces, and those are the leakiest design there is — large under-capped flues, aging crowns, and brick that's been soaking up wind-driven rain for decades. Homes here lean hard on their hearths for heat, so a leak that also lets cold air and moisture pour in is worth solving before the season deepens. Sealing the top, or moving to a sealed insert, fixes the water and the draft at once.

Haywood repairs, done once

We find the real entry — cap, crown, flashing, or spalled masonry — rather than chase the stain, and coordinate a Haywood County repair with our mason partners when brick needs rebuilding. If water has reached a gas insert's controls, the licensed gas side is ours to handle. We're about thirty-five minutes west of the Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525.
