Why does my gas fireplace's main burner light and then go out after a few seconds?
In Maggie Valley, where propane feeds most fireplaces and a lot of them sit in vacation cabins, this failure usually surfaces the day guests arrive. The unit sat idle for weeks, a spider or dust clogged the LP pilot over the off-season, the pilot now burns too cool to heat the thermopile, and the burner quits seconds after lighting.
Idle cabins are the setup for it
A fireplace that lights instantly for guests is the whole point of a Maggie Valley rental — and the whole vulnerability. Over weeks of sitting cold, dust and insects work into the pilot assembly and orifices; the next time it lights, the pilot burns small and never fully heats the thermopile, so it can't hold the valve and the flame drops out. At 3,000-plus feet and among the coldest communities we serve, that's a call you don't want on a booked weekend.
Propane makes the pilot check non-negotiable
These are propane units, and LP wants a correctly sized, clean orifice and the right pressure to burn a strong pilot. We clear the pilot, confirm the LP setup, then meter the thermopile at rest and under load. Only after the pilot is right does the reading tell us whether it's a tired sensor, a connection, or the valve that's giving up.
Get ahead of rental season
The smart move for owners is a pre-season inspection before the peak rental months — we'd rather clean a lazy pilot in the fall than get a guest's no-heat call in January. We're 40 minutes west, and gas work stays with a licensed contractor. Call (828) 545-0525.
