Why does my gas fireplace shut down in windy or snowy weather?

In Montford, North Asheville, and Biltmore Village you'll find original masonry fireplaces retrofitted with gas — often standing-pilot systems, where a strong downdraft off our surrounding ridges cools the pilot flame until the thermocouple stops proving it and the valve shuts. The newer clean-face and linear direct-vent fireplaces going into South Asheville builds fail differently: wind pressure at the coaxial cap unsettles the sealed flame and trips the sensor.

Snow caps, and nights that stay cold late

Asheville's elevation keeps nighttime lows in the 20s well into early spring, so this isn't a deep-January-only problem — you can be leaning on the fireplace in March. A termination set low on a wall where snow drifts, or one that glazes with ice after a freeze-thaw, starves the burner of combustion air and the safety cuts it off.

Clearing the cap through a storm sometimes settles it. A vent that ices up again and again is usually located wrong or wearing the wrong cap for our weather.
