Why does my gas fireplace shut down in windy or snowy weather?

In Brevard, the version of this problem we see most is ice, not just wind. Transylvania County catches 80-plus inches of rain a year, and when that soaks a vent cap and then freezes, it glazes the termination shut — starving a sealed gas fireplace of combustion air until the safety trips. Gusts do their part too, but our wet-cold climate is the real driver here.

Rain, freeze-thaw, and a glazed-over cap

Brevard's defining weather is water. All that rainfall works into crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers — and on a gas fireplace it collects at the vent termination, where a hard freeze turns it to ice. An iced cap chokes off the combustion air a direct-vent unit needs, the flame spills or weakens, and the flame sensor shuts the burner down.

It runs fine again the next mild afternoon, which is exactly why it gets mistaken for a fussy fireplace instead of a blocked vent. The wet season here runs March through June, so this isn't only a midwinter concern.

Cabins, propane, and moisture-prone chases

Out toward Connestee Falls, Sherwood Forest, and the cabins, plenty of homes run on propane, and their crawl spaces and chimney chases are especially prone to moisture damage. A propane direct-vent unit fails in wind and snow the same way a natural-gas one does — but a cabin that sits empty between weekends can ice its cap unnoticed and greet you with no heat on arrival.

Transylvania County, and the right cap for a wet climate

The fix is often a termination better suited to Brevard's rain and ice, correctly located and pitched. That's licensed gas and venting work — we pull the Transylvania County permit, meet the inspector, and pressure-test the line.
