Why does my gas fireplace shut down in windy or snowy weather?

Flat Rock's housing is its story here: many homes date to the 1800s, with oversized open masonry fireplaces and aging clay flue liners. When one of those has been converted to gas and shuts down in wind or snow, the culprit is usually the old, tall flue — a hard downdraft rushes down that big chimney, cools the flame or pilot, and the safety closes the gas valve.

Old flues meet modern gas

The historic homes around Historic Flat Rock, Kanuga, and Highland Lake were built for wood, with large open fireboxes and clay-lined chimneys sized for a roaring fire. Drop a gas log set or an older standing-pilot unit into that setup and the oversized flue becomes a liability in weather: cold, gusty air pours down the big chimney, cools the pilot until the thermocouple loses it, and the burner shuts off.

It's the price of that character — and part of why a sealed insert, which doesn't rely on the old flue, is such a strong fix for these houses.

Sealed inserts and snow-capped vents

Where a home has moved to a sealed direct-vent insert or fireplace, the failure shifts to the termination: wind pressure at the cap unsettles the flame, or blowing snow and freeze-thaw ice block it and starve the burner. A sealed unit also solves the draftiness those old open hearths pull into the room all winter, while leaving the historic mantel and surround untouched.

Henderson County, preserving the character

Right-sizing an old flue or fitting a sealed insert is licensed gas and venting work — Henderson County permit, inspector, pressure test. We'll keep the home's period look intact rather than gut it. Call (828) 545-0525, about 30 minutes south of the Asheville showroom.
