Why does my gas fireplace shut down in windy or snowy weather?

Gorge wind and cramped vent routing

Cool damp air and snow at the cap

The gorge also brings cool, damp evenings, and blowing snow or freeze-thaw ice can cap a termination and starve the burner of air. On older hillside homes with standing-pilot gas, a strong channeled gust can cool the pilot until the thermocouple drops it. The common thread is airflow at the vent, not a fuel problem — which is why the fix lives outside at the cap, not inside at the burner.
