Why does my gas fireplace shut down in windy or snowy weather?

In Mills River, many homes sit on large rural lots running propane, and a propane fireplace shuts down in wind or snow the same way a natural-gas one does — at the vent. The open Mills River valley gives wind a clean run at a sealed direct-vent termination, and blowing snow can cap it; either starves or unsettles the flame until the safety valve closes.

Propane country, open-valley wind

Out here among the farmland and forest around Horse Shoe, Banner Farm, and the Mills River valley, plenty of properties are on propane rather than a gas main. The fuel doesn't change the failure — a direct-vent propane unit breathes through the same kind of coaxial termination, and the valley's openness means wind reaches it with little to break it up.

When gusts push back against the exhaust, the sealed flame unsettles and the sensor trips. On older standing-pilot LP units, a strong blast can cool the pilot enough to drop it out entirely.

Snow at the cap, and idle systems

Blowing snow that packs a low termination, or ice after a freeze-thaw, chokes off combustion air just as effectively. On a larger rural property where a fireplace might sit unused for a stretch, a blocked cap can go unnoticed until you flip the switch and get nothing on the coldest night of the year. It's worth confirming the termination is clear and correctly located before deep winter.

Henderson County, and the outdoor season too

Fixing a vent or propane connection is licensed gas work — Henderson County permit, inspector, pressure test. And since Mills River's open valley is made for outdoor living, ask us about a properly built gas fire pit while we're out; late spring is the time to plan it. Call (828) 545-0525, about 25 minutes south.
