Why does my gas fireplace shut off by itself after a few minutes?

Original gas conversions in Montford and North Asheville almost always run a standing pilot — a small flame that heats a metal probe called the thermocouple, whose tiny voltage is the only thing holding the main gas valve open. After years of heat cycling that probe weakens, drifts out of the flame, or loosens at the valve, and the burner cuts out within minutes.

A little soot on the rod or a weak ground, and the board decides there's no flame and shuts the fuel down.
