Why does my gas fireplace shut off by itself after a few minutes?
Brevard sits in propane country, so on an LP fireplace a few-minute shut-off usually means the pilot isn't heating the thermocouple strongly enough — but here it's worth checking the propane side too, since a tired regulator or a tank drawn low in cold weather can starve the pilot of the steady pressure it needs to stay lit.
Propane changes the checklist
Propane burns hotter and runs at different pressures and orifice sizes than natural gas, which is why a slightly clogged LP pilot or an orifice off spec burns lazy and never wraps the probe in a strong blue flame. Beyond the thermocouple itself, the regulator and the tank belong on the list in a way they simply don't on the Asheville and Hendersonville mains — a distinction that matters out here in the cabins and Connestee Falls.
Transylvania's 80 inches of rain corrodes the connection
Brevard's wet season from March through June is punishing — more than 80 inches of annual rain cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers, and it works into the crawl spaces and chimney chases that are already moisture-prone here. That same damp corrodes the thermocouple's connection at the valve, dropping its signal until the burner won't hold. In this climate, moisture is a genuine second suspect, not an afterthought.
