Why does my gas fireplace shut off by itself after a few minutes?
In Black Mountain the Swannanoa Valley's cold-air inversions push mornings 10 to 15 degrees below Asheville, and a cold, sluggish start can leave the pilot too weak to hold the gas valve open — the burner lights, the probe never reaches full heat, and it shuts off within minutes to keep raw gas out of the room.
Cold flue, cold pilot
On those frosty valley mornings, cold air settles in the flue like a plug, and a marginal pilot has to fight it to build a strong flame around the thermocouple. If the pilot is already burning small from off-season dust, it loses that fight and the probe cools below the point where it can hold the valve. Black Mountain is served by natural-gas mains, so this isn't a fuel-supply problem — it's a pilot that needs cleaning and tuning.
Montreat's shaded, damp lots add corrosion
Up in Montreat and Ridgecrest, the heavily wooded lots keep houses cool, shaded, and moist year-round. That persistent damp corrodes the thermocouple connection at the valve over the seasons, producing the same lights-then-quits symptom by a different path. And because late-spring frost lingers here, these fireplaces stay in service well past when lower towns have shut theirs down — more run time, more chances for a tired pilot to show itself.
Fifteen minutes east and licensed
We're just 15 minutes east of our Asheville showroom, so a Black Mountain no-heat call turns around quickly. A licensed tune-up cleans the pilot, tightens connections, and confirms the millivolt signal — usually a cleaning or an inexpensive part. Call (828) 545-0525.
