Why won't my gas fireplace turn off?

Shut it down safely first

You don't have to sit and watch a fireplace you can't turn off. Every gas fireplace has a manual gas control — on standing-pilot units the knob turns to OFF, and there's a shutoff valve in the supply line, usually behind the lower louver or at the floor nearby. Turning that to off cuts the fuel and stops the flame.

If you smell gas — a rotten-egg odor — don't troubleshoot at all. Leave the house and call us. That protocol is not optional.

Stuck valve versus stuck signal

Mechanically, it's one of two families. The gas valve itself can stick open, so fuel keeps flowing even with no call for it — that's a valve that needs to be replaced by a licensed tech. Or the control signal is stuck on: a wall switch that's failed closed, a remote receiver whose relay is jammed, or wiring that's shorted, all keep telling the valve to stay open.

On remote and thermostat units, a stuck relay in the receiver is a common culprit. Which one it is changes the part, so we diagnose before quoting.
