Will a fireplace blower run during a power outage?

In Clyde, no — the blower is an electric fan, so it stops when the power does. A lot of Clyde's 1960s-to-80s ranches are ready for insert upgrades, and inserts often come with a blower standard — but that fan is a bonus, not the heat. On millivolt or battery-backup ignition, the insert keeps radiating warmth without it.

Ranch-era fireplaces, ready for an insert

Clyde's housing skews toward 1960s-to-80s ranch-style homes with dated fireplaces that are prime candidates for an insert. A sealed gas insert turns a tired, drafty firebox into an efficient heater — inserts commonly run 70% efficient or better, where an open masonry fireplace can actually run a net heat loss. The Kozy Heat Chaska 25L is a good example: an insert that comes with a blower standard, so you get fast heat distribution on a normal day and radiant heat off the glass when the grid's down. Out toward Crabtree and Fines Creek, those ranch fireboxes are well past their prime, and an insert is the upgrade that finally makes them heat.

Don't let the blower fool you

It's a common worry — if the insert has a blower, doesn't an outage still leave you cold? No. The blower speeds and spreads the heat when there's power; take it away and a properly sized insert still radiates warmth into the room. Spec millivolt or battery-backup ignition and the burner lights without the grid, so the only thing you lose is reach, which you make up by staying near the hearth until power returns.

River damp, and a Haywood permit

Clyde shares the Pigeon valley's cold-air drainage and river humidity, which rust dampers and degrade masonry chimneys — another reason a sealed insert with a fresh liner beats limping along on an old open flue. Installing it is licensed gas work: we permit it with Haywood County and meet the inspector. We're 25 minutes west of our Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free assessment.
