Are gas log BTU ratings different for propane versus natural gas?
In Arden the log set is configured for natural gas, because Skyland and Royal Pines sit on the mains. The catch here is the housing: 1980s and 90s homes full of tired open masonry fireplaces. When we convert one to a gas set, the natural-gas orifice and pressure govern the rating, and the propane build of the same logs would read differently on the spec sheet.
Turning a drafty firebox into a real heater
Those open masonry fireplaces pull heat out of the room more than they add it, sending most of it straight up the flue. A sealed gas insert or a vented log set changes that, and on the Arden mains it is built for natural gas. The metering orifice is sized to the fuel, and the max BTU on the appliance only means something once the jet and supply pressure are matched to the natural gas already at the house. Why the orifice is not interchangeable
Natural gas and propane are not swappable at the burner. Natural gas runs lower pressure and carries less energy per cubic foot, so it uses a larger jet than propane. A propane-jetted set on the Arden mains runs weak and cold; a natural-gas set on a tank over-fires and blackens the logs. That is why we confirm your supply before a single set is spec'd, even in a gas-main neighborhood where the answer is usually, but not always, natural gas.
