Are gas log BTU ratings different for propane versus natural gas?
In Black Mountain your log set is configured for natural gas, because downtown and the Swannanoa Valley draw the mains. The natural-gas and propane builds of the same logs are not interchangeable, each carrying its own orifice and supply pressure, and the spec sheet may list a different max BTU for each, so the natural-gas number is the one that governs your flame.
You run it hard in the valley inversion
The Swannanoa Valley traps cold air, and Black Mountain mornings can sit ten to fifteen degrees colder than Asheville, with frost dates that push later into spring. That means the hearth works long hours here, and the BTU rating you care about is a real number, not a brochure figure. It only delivers, though, when the natural-gas orifice and pressure are dialed in, because an underfired flame starves for heat and an overfired one soots the logs and dirties the glass. On the mains, natural gas is the correct build, and that is the rating that counts.
Montreat's shaded, damp lots
Up in heavily wooded Montreat the houses stay cool and moisture-prone, and a sealed gas appliance holds up better than an open masonry firebox against that damp. Whichever set you choose, it leaves the factory metered for natural gas, and we verify the supply rather than assume it, since the occasional ridge property or Ridgecrest cabin runs a tank instead. A natural-gas set connected to that tank would over-fire, so the check is worth the two minutes it takes us to confirm.
Fifteen minutes east, permitted and pressure-tested
