Are gas log BTU ratings different for propane versus natural gas?
Flat Rock's historic homes drive the answer here. Many date to the 1800s with oversized open masonry fireplaces and aging clay flue liners, and when we drop a vented log set into one, it is configured for natural gas because the village sits on the mains. The propane build of the same logs uses a smaller orifice, so the spec sheet may list a different rated BTU for each fuel.

These big old fireboxes were built to pull cold-air drafts and lose most of their heat up an aging clay flue. A natural-gas vented log set restores the look of a wood fire while you keep the historic character, and a sealed insert goes further by fixing the draftiness entirely. Whatever the choice, the burner is orificed and pressured for natural gas, and the rating printed on it assumes exactly that supply. Dropping a beautiful set into a grand old firebox is only half the work; matching its jet to the village gas is the half that makes it burn clean.
Why fuel and orifice cannot be mixed
The reason a Flat Rock set is not fuel-agnostic comes down to physics. Natural gas is lower pressure and lower energy per cubic foot than propane, so it needs a larger metering jet. Swap fuels without swapping the orifice and the flame is wrong, sooty on propane, weak on gas. On the village mains, natural gas is the correct build, and we confirm it at the meter before quoting, because an old home near Highland Lake or Kanuga occasionally surprises you with a tank.
Henderson County, character preserved
We permit the work with Henderson County and connect the line as a licensed gas contractor, keeping the old masonry intact while making it burn clean and safe. A mason can rebuild the stone and a showroom can sell the logs, but neither can legally join it to fuel in North Carolina.
