Can gas logs be installed in any existing fireplace?
In Asheville it depends entirely on which fireplace you've got. The original masonry hearths in Montford and North Asheville are usually real, code-compliant wood-burning fireplaces that take vented gas logs beautifully. The clean-face prefab boxes in newer South Asheville builds often aren't rated for them. We check the firebox and flue before we quote either way.
Two kinds of Asheville fireplace, two answers
Asheville's housing stock splits this question in half. A genuine masonry fireplace — the kind built into Montford's older homes with a solid firebox and a chimney behind it — is the natural home for a vented Real Fyre set: tall yellow flame, damper open, the closest gas comes to a wood fire. But a lot of South Asheville construction came with a shallow decorative box or a sealed prefab unit that was never engineered to hold burning logs. Drop a log set into the wrong one and you've built a hazard, not a fireplace, which is why we read the build before we quote.
Natural gas is the easy part here
You're on the Asheville mains, so fuel is rarely the obstacle — most homes off Merrimon or through West Asheville already have natural gas at the meter, and running or extending the line to your firebox is licensed work we handle in-house. In North Carolina a showroom or a mason can sell you a log set but legally can't connect it to fuel; we can, and we permit and pressure-test the line. That single-source accountability matters more than people expect.
We pull the Buncombe permit and inspect first
Before anything lights, we look at your firebox, damper, and flue and pull the permit with Buncombe County. Since we're headquartered right up the road at 629 Emma Rd, an inspection visit is a short trip — and at Asheville's elevation, where nights still drop into the 20s well into spring, a working hearth earns its keep.
