Can gas logs be installed in any existing fireplace?
Around Brevard, plan on two things: propane and moisture. Vented gas logs need a sound wood-burning fireplace with a working damper — and Transylvania's 80-plus inches of annual rain is hard on crowns, brick, and the steel dampers those logs depend on. We inspect for water damage, and we set your logs up for propane, not natural gas.
Propane country, ordered right
Brevard is propane territory — the cabins and downtown homes out here run on LP, not a gas main. A Real Fyre vented set can absolutely burn on propane, but it has to be specified and orificed for it; a log set jetted for natural gas will soot and burn wrong on LP. Connecting or extending that propane line is licensed gas work in North Carolina, which is exactly the piece a furniture showroom or a mason legally can't do for you. We can, and we permit it — the tank itself coordinated with your propane supplier.
What all that rain does to a fireplace
Transylvania County catches some of the wettest weather in the state, and it shows up in chimneys — cracked crowns, spalled brick, and rusted-through dampers, especially after the March-to-June wet season. Vented logs require a damper that seals and holds open on command, and a flue that hasn't been eaten by water. Crawl spaces and chimney chases around Brevard trap that moisture, so a fireplace that looks fine can fail on the inside. That's why we look before we quote a log set.
