Can I get a fireplace quote from photos, or is a site visit required?

Old flue liners hide their condition
A historic Flat Rock chimney can look perfectly sound in a photo while its clay liner is cracked, gapped, or undersized for a modern appliance. That liner's real state decides everything — whether a sealed insert with a new stainless liner drops in, whether the flue needs relining, or whether direct-vent out a sidewall is the smarter path. We assess it standing in the room and, when needed, up on the roof, because the picture simply can't show us what's behind the brick.
Sealing a drafty oversized hearth
Those big open masonry fireboxes are handsome, but they pull cold air into the room and lose most of their heat up the chimney. A sealed insert keeps the character while turning it into a real heater — the trick is sizing the insert to an oversized opening and honoring clearances, which is an in-person measurement, not a guess from an image. We'd rather get it right once than trim to fit after the fact.
