Rental housing around Cullowhee and WCU tends to be used hard and maintained inconsistently, so what looks fine in a photo may hide a neglected flue, a tired valve, or a burner overdue for service. Historic Dillsboro homes bring the opposite issue — older masonry chimneys whose condition only reveals itself up close. Whether the right move is a sealed insert, a reline, or a repair is a judgment we make on site, not from an image.
River-valley moisture works against you
The Tuckasegee valley pushes cold-air drainage and damp river air through Sylva, and that moisture rusts dampers and degrades flue liners faster than owners expect. We check for it in person because it changes the recommendation — a corroded flue might mean relining or bypassing the chimney with a sealed direct-vent unit. A photo can't show us rust working from the inside out, so we look before we commit to a plan or a price.
