Can I put gas logs in my Heatilator wood-burning fireplace?
In Maggie Valley you're on propane, full stop — there's no gas main up here at 3,000 feet — so any gas logs run on an LP setup. Maggie Valley rentals and cabins sit cold for weeks, then a guest arrives expecting instant fire. An LP vented log set works, but a sealed gas insert with reliable ignition is more forgiving of long idle stretches and mountain damp — and it puts out real heat at 3,020 feet, one of the coldest communities we serve. For a property that has to perform on demand, that reliability matters more than a taller flame.
Is the firebox even rated for logs?
A masonry Heatilator takes a vented propane set; a factory zero-clearance box is often certified for wood only. In a vacation rental, matching the manufacturer's rating isn't optional — an unrated conversion is exactly the kind of thing that voids a homeowner's insurance after a claim. So the model plate comes first, every time.
Pre-season timing and the Haywood permit
