Can you put stone veneer over a brick fireplace?

Yes — brick is an ideal base for stone veneer, and Arden has plenty of tired open-masonry fireplaces ready for it. Those 1980s-and-'90s brick fireboxes in Royal Pines and Skyland are non-combustible and load-bearing, so thin stone bonds right over them. And since they tend to be drafty, a reface is the moment to make the fireplace actually heat.

From drafty to real heater

The open masonry fireplaces in Arden's Royal Pines and Skyland neighborhoods have a well-earned reputation for pulling heat out of the room — big open fireboxes send most of their warmth up the flue and draw cold air back down. Covering the brick in stacked stone gives you the look; setting a sealed gas insert into the opening at the same time gives you the heat. Arden sits on natural-gas mains, so the fuel is right there, and a sealed insert can run 70 percent efficient or better where the open box loses ground. It's the single most satisfying upgrade we do on these tired fireplaces.

The licensed side of the job

Running the gas line for that insert is licensed work in North Carolina — a mason or general contractor can build a beautiful stone surround but legally can't connect it to fuel. We do both, pull the Buncombe County permit, pressure-test the line, and meet the inspector. Whether it's a Skyland ranch or a Biltmore Park office space, we keep the appliance, venting, gas, and stone on one ticket. Fifteen minutes south of our Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525.

Sound brick, honored clearances

Before veneer, we confirm the brick is clean and solid — painted or sealed faces need lath so the mortar grabs. And however you pattern the stone across the brick field, the firebox's listed clearance to combustibles governs the layout at the opening. That line protects your home and your homeowner's insurance.
