Can you put stone veneer over a brick fireplace?
Yes — brick is a first-rate base for stone veneer, and Black Mountain has no shortage of it. Being non-combustible and load-bearing, brick lets thin natural or manufactured stone bond straight over the face. In the shaded, moisture-prone lots around Montreat and the Swannanoa Valley, we just check the brick for damp and efflorescence before starting, since stone needs a clean, dry surface to grab.
Damp, shaded brick needs a look first
Black Mountain and especially Montreat sit under heavy tree canopy on cool, shaded lots, and the Swannanoa Valley's temperature inversions keep mornings 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville. That combination keeps masonry damp longer, and damp brick can show efflorescence — the white, powdery salt bloom that stops mortar from bonding. We clean and, where needed, prep those faces so the veneer grabs. Late frost dates here mean the heating season lingers, so it's worth getting the reface done right the first time; on dry, sound brick the stone goes on directly over a scratch coat.
The reface that also heats
Downtown Black Mountain runs on natural-gas mains, so the smart move on a reface is to set a sealed gas insert behind the new stone — real, power-optional heat in a valley that stays cold well into spring. Running or extending that gas line is licensed work in North Carolina; a mason can build you a gorgeous stone surround but legally can't connect it to fuel. Where the stone stops
Stone can wrap the brick field in any pattern you like, but around the firebox opening the unit's listed clearance to combustibles sets the boundary, and some fireboxes want a non-combustible border before decorative material begins.
