Can you put stone veneer over a brick fireplace?

Yes, with one Brevard-specific condition: the brick has to be sound first. Brick is non-combustible and load-bearing, which makes it an ideal veneer base — but Transylvania County gets 80-plus inches of rain a year, and that moisture spalls brick faces and rusts old anchors. We assess the masonry before committing to stone; solid brick takes veneer beautifully.

Rain is the real variable here

Nowhere else we serve is wetter. Brevard's long March-through-June wet season, plus 80-plus inches of annual rainfall, works on masonry constantly — crowns crack, brick faces spall and flake, and dampers and anchors rust. Stone veneer needs a rigid, intact surface to grab, so on a fireplace that's taken years of moisture we check for spalling and soft mortar first and stabilize what's failing. Cover crumbling brick and the stone comes down with it; cover sound brick and it holds for decades.

Downtown home or mountain cabin

Brevard is propane country for the most part — the cabins out in Connestee Falls, Sherwood Forest, and toward Pisgah run on LP, with some in-town homes on a line. That matters if you want more than a facelift: pairing the reface with a sealed direct-vent insert gives you power-optional heat, and on propane it needs the correct orifices and pressures set by a licensed gas contractor. We pull the Transylvania County permit, pressure-test the line, and meet the inspector, about 40 minutes from our Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525.

Keeping water out for good

Because moisture is the local enemy, we make sure the finished fireplace and its cap shed water rather than trap it behind new stone — a wet wall behind veneer is how the whole reface fails. On the cabins especially, a stainless cap and proper flashing do as much for the stone's lifespan as the mortar does.
