Can you put stone veneer over a brick fireplace?

Yes — and in Candler's newer subdivisions that reface comes with a caveat worth knowing. Many of those homes have a basic decorative builder firebox faced in a thin brick front, and while brick is non-combustible and load-bearing, that front often wraps a factory-built unit. Thin stone veneer works well over it — as long as its listed clearances are respected at the opening.

Decorative fireboxes and their clearances

Candler is one of Asheville's fastest-growing suburbs, and a lot of the new subdivisions came with basic, decorative builder-grade fireboxes — nice enough to look at, not built to heat. Stone veneer transforms the look, but because many of these are factory-built units behind a thin brick face, the manufacturer's listed clearance to combustibles governs exactly how close decorative stone can come to the opening. We read that listing before we plan the layout, so the finished reface is both handsome and to code.

Clean, sealed heat for the valley

Owners here usually want the reface to buy them real heat, not just looks — and Hominy Valley's natural bowl makes a clean-burning sealed appliance especially smart, keeping combustion and smoke sealed away from the air that settles low in the valley. Out on these lots, much of Candler runs on propane, so a sealed LP insert behind your new stone is often the path — set with the correct orifices and pressures, or it soots. That's licensed gas work we permit and pressure-test; a mason legally can't connect it. We pull the Buncombe County permit and meet the inspector. Call (828) 545-0525.

Fifteen minutes from the showroom

Candler sits about 15 minutes west of our Asheville showroom at 629 Emma Rd, so we can look at your firebox, confirm the brick is sound, and prep any painted surface with lath before the stone goes on. One company handles the appliance, the venting, the gas, and the stonework.
