Can you put stone veneer over a brick fireplace?
Yes — brick is a great base for stone veneer, but in Canton we start with what the water did. After the Pigeon River flooding, plenty of hearths and gas connections took damage, and brick that sat in floodwater can carry salts and hidden softening. Once we confirm the masonry is sound and dry, thin stone bonds right over it — non-combustible, load-bearing, ideal.
Flood brick tells a story
Canton's mill-town homes along the Pigeon River valley saw real damage, and floodwater leaves a mark on masonry long after it recedes — trapped moisture, efflorescence salts blooming on the face, and mortar that's quietly given up. Stone veneer needs a rigid, dry, sound surface to grab, so on a fireplace that took water we check the brick and the mortar carefully and stabilize or repoint what's failed before any scratch coat goes on. Cover compromised brick and the stone fails with it.
Don't forget what feeds the firebox
If your reface includes a gas insert or gas logs, the gas connection matters more here than almost anywhere — flood-exposed lines and valves need a licensed inspection before they carry fuel again.
