Can you put stone veneer over a brick fireplace?

Yes — brick makes an ideal base for stone veneer, and Sylva has it in both the historic Dillsboro homes and the rentals near campus. Brick is non-combustible and load-bearing, so thin stone bonds right over a sound face. Sylva sits in Jackson County, about 50 minutes west of our Asheville showroom, and we pull the permit and meet the inspector there just as we do closer to home.

Jackson County, and the drive that comes with it

Sylva is one of our farther-out towns, and distance shapes how we plan a reface — we scope the brick, the flue, and any gas work in one visit so the job runs efficiently on the second. Because it's Jackson County rather than Buncombe, we pull the permit with the county here and meet its inspector; the North Carolina licensing law is the same statewide. Any gas line feeding an insert behind your new stone is licensed work, ours to permit and pressure-test, and never a mason's to connect.

River moisture and older flues

The Tuckasegee valley runs cold-air drainage and river moisture that rust dampers and degrade flue liners faster than you'd expect, and the historic Dillsboro masonry shows its age. Before we cover brick with stone, we confirm the masonry and its liner are sound — a reface is the wrong time to discover a failing flue hidden behind fresh veneer. Sylva is mixed-fuel, gas in spots and propane elsewhere, and either can feed a sealed insert if you want heat, not just looks. Call (828) 545-0525.

Rentals get used hard

The student and rental housing near WCU tends to be heavily used and inconsistently maintained, so we pay extra attention to brick soundness and clearances on those fireplaces. Painted or soot-glazed faces get lath or prep so the mortar bonds; sound brick takes a scratch coat directly. The clearance line around the opening still governs the layout on every one of them.
