Can you put stone veneer over a brick fireplace?
Yes — brick is an ideal substrate for stone veneer, and Weaverville gives us two very different bricks to work with. Whether it's an inefficient original firebox downtown or a builder-grade front in a new Reems Creek build, the brick is non-combustible and load-bearing, so thin stone bonds right over it. The right approach just depends on which one you have.
Old downtown masonry vs. new Reems Creek fronts
Weaverville is growing fast, and that shows up at the fireplace. Downtown, we're covering older original masonry fireboxes — solid, structural brick that can carry heavier full-thickness stone if you want the deep, chiseled look. Out in the Reems Creek subdivisions, the brick is often a thin builder-grade face wrapped around a factory-built firebox, where thin veneer and its listed clearances are the right call. Same answer — yes, cover it — but we confirm what's behind the brick before choosing the stone and the method.
A north valley that stays cold
Weaverville faces north, so spring warm-ups come slower here than in Asheville and the fireplace stays in play longer. That's an argument for making the reface more than cosmetic: on the natural-gas mains that serve most of town, a sealed gas insert behind the new stone turns a tired downtown firebox into a real heater. The gas line is licensed work — we permit and pressure-test it, pull the Buncombe County permit, and meet the inspector. Fifteen minutes north of our showroom, we can look at your brick this week. Sound brick, then stone
Either way, the brick has to be clean and sound. Painted or sealed faces — common on the downtown remodels — need lath or mechanical prep so the mortar bonds; new builder brick usually takes a scratch coat directly. Get the prep right and the stone holds for decades rather than working loose after a couple of cold seasons.
