An old house needs the estimate more, not less

Historic Flat Rock's oversized open hearths look wonderful and heat terribly — they pull cold-air drafts down into the room and send most of the warmth up a flue that may be a century old. The free estimate is where we read all of that: the condition of the clay liner, the size of the firebox, and whether a sealed direct-vent or gas insert would fix the draftiness while preserving the mantel and character you bought the house for. There's no charge because this is how the project starts.

Preserving character, honoring clearances

The goal in Kanuga and the Flat Rock Village homes is usually the same: keep the look, gain real heat. On the estimate we plan a sealed insert and liner that honor the manufacturer's clearances and the home's original masonry, and — because Flat Rock is on natural gas — trace the line to the hearth. We pull the permit with Henderson County and meet the inspector so a change to a protected-feeling old home is documented and insurable.

Because these homes carry real history, we treat the free estimate as much like an inspection as a quote — reading whether an old clay liner is safe to keep, whether the crown has cracked, and how a sealed unit tucks in without disturbing the original brick. If the honest answer is that your open hearth is worth preserving as decorative-only, we'll say so; we'd rather fit the house than sell you the biggest appliance.

When it's the $125 diagnostic instead

If a gas unit already installed in the home has failed — pilot won't hold, no spark — that's the diagnostic, quoted before work, not a free quote for new work. Most repairs finish in a single visit. It's a 30-minute drive south for us; the Asheville showroom is another option. Call (828) 545-0525.
