Do fireplace dealers charge for in-home estimates or quotes?

What typically does carry a fee is a diagnostic visit on broken equipment; ours is a $125 diagnostic fee, because troubleshooting a dead fireplace is skilled labor rather than a sales call.

A sales estimate and a service diagnostic look similar — a truck shows up, someone examines your fireplace — but they're different visits. An estimate is us measuring your room, tracing a venting route, checking your gas supply, and pricing new work; dealers give those away because it's how projects start. A diagnostic is a technician with test equipment figuring out why your existing fireplace won't light, which takes trained time whether or not you buy anything afterward. That's why free-quote and diagnostic-fee policies coexist at the same company without contradiction. Some outfits do charge for design consultations and credit it back if you buy — always ask up front so a surprise fee doesn't sour a good fit.
What a good free estimate should cover
Beware the number quoted over the phone, sight unseen — nobody can price a fireplace without seeing the wall, the venting path, and the fuel situation. A real estimate covers the room size (the sizing rule of thumb is around 20 Btu per square foot in a moderate climate, and WNC's mountain winters push that up), whether you're on the Asheville or Hendersonville gas mains or in propane country out toward Fairview or Candler, the gas-line route, and the permit. It should end as a written scope you can compare against other bids line by line.
