Propane, wood, and how much power you've got

Leicester's large rural lots run heavily on propane and wood, and out toward Sandy Mush and Turkey Creek some properties have limited electrical capacity — all of which the free estimate has to weigh. If a home can't spare much power, a millivolt or battery-backup gas unit, or straight wood heat, may make far more sense than something that needs a circuit. That's a real design conversation, not a phone quote, and settling it on-site is why the visit is worth doing and why we don't charge for it.

Cold hollows make backup heat matter

Cold-air drainage runs Leicester's rural valleys 5 to 8 degrees colder than Asheville on clear winter nights, and out here the power can be slower to come back — so a hearth that heats without the grid isn't a luxury. Wood is total independence; battery-backup or millivolt gas keeps heat coming when the lines are down. On propane setups we check the tank, regulator, and pressure. We pull the Buncombe County permit and pressure-test any gas line we run.

On a remote property the free estimate can genuinely change the appliance we recommend — a home short on electrical headroom is better served by a non-electric gas unit or a wood stove than by anything needing a dedicated circuit, and that's a conversation worth having in person. We'd rather match the heat to how the property actually runs than sell you a unit it can't comfortably support, especially where the power comes back slowly after a storm.
