Marshall's homes climb steep hillsides with limited access, and downtown's revitalized buildings are stacked narrow and multi-story right against the mountain — so a big part of the free estimate is simply working out where a vent can safely terminate and how a gas line reaches the appliance. You can't price that sight-unseen, which is exactly why we don't try to over the phone and don't charge to come look. The French Broad gorge also brings cool, damp evenings that tighter, sealed units handle better.

Draft is trickier here — and that's on us to solve

Tight mountainside lots and gorge air can make an open fireplace draft poorly, with cold air sitting in a cold flue like a plug. On the estimate we weigh whether a sealed direct-vent unit sidesteps the draft problem entirely, and — since Marshall is mixed-fuel — confirm whether you're on gas or propane. As a licensed gas contractor we pull the permit with your Madison County office and pressure-test the line; a mason or handyman legally can't connect the fuel.

On these hillsides the free visit frequently reshapes the plan entirely — a wall you pictured for a fireplace may not offer a safe vent route, while another does, and only a walk-through reveals it. We'd rather solve that on-site, for free, than quote something that can't be built. The narrow downtown buildings stacked against the mountain add their own puzzle, and a sealed direct-vent unit is often the cleanest answer to both the draft and the tight footprint.
