The vent-free option
Superior also makes one of the more powerful vent-free units we install, the VRT4036 — 36 inches, 40,000 BTU natural gas, 99.9% efficiency, with a millivolt valve and an oxygen-depletion sensor. Vent-free means the damper stays closed and nearly all the heat stays in the room, so it's an efficient supplemental heater. But it comes with rules: it adds moisture to the air, it has room-size Btu limits, and it's restricted or prohibited in some applications — bedrooms and bathrooms in particular. We install vent-free only where it's correctly sized and code-legal; when in doubt, we'll point you to a direct-vent unit that sidesteps the whole question.
