My gas fireplace pilot is lit but the main burner won't come on — what's wrong?

Idle units fail in predictable ways
Up here off Soco Road and Jonathan Creek, a rental fireplace might sit unused through shoulder weeks, and while it sits, spiders and dust settle into the burner ports and pilot assembly. When a guest finally flips the switch, gas can't cross cleanly from pilot to burner, so the pilot proves but the flame never spreads. Alongside that, the thermopile — the sensor whose voltage opens the main valve — tends to weaken with age and long cold spells, until it holds the pilot without firing the burner. At 3,020 feet Maggie Valley is propane country, not the gas main. A pilot needs very little fuel, so a low tank or a regulator that isn't holding pressure can keep the pilot lit while starving the main burner. We verify the LP side with your supplier as part of the diagnosis, and confirm the unit's orifices match propane, since a wrong-fuel setup soots and stumbles the same way.
