My gas fireplace pilot is lit but the main burner won't come on — what's wrong?
Because so many Mills River homes run on propane out on their large rural lots, a lit pilot with a dead burner here can be two things: the usual worn thermopile, or an LP fuel-delivery problem — a low tank or a regulator not holding pressure — starving the burner while the pilot stays lit. We check both sides in Henderson County.
Propane country changes the checklist
Mills River spreads across farmland and forest, and out on those Horse Shoe and Banner Farm properties propane is the rule rather than the gas main. That matters, because propane burns hotter per unit and runs at different pressures than natural gas. When the pilot lights but the main burner won't, we don't just assume the sensor — we check the tank level and the regulator too, coordinating with your propane supplier, since a low tank or a weak regulator can deliver enough gas for a pilot but not enough to carry a full burner. A wrong-fuel orifice from a bad conversion will soot and misbehave the same way. On the larger Banner Farm and Mills River Valley properties the LP line can run a long way from the tank to the house, and a marginal regulator shows itself first at the hungriest appliance — the main burner — long before the pilot ever flickers.
The thermopile is still the leading part
On the appliance side, the most common single failure is the thermopile — the pilot-heated sensor that makes the few hundred millivolts that open the main valve. As it ages it makes less, until it holds the pilot but can't fire the burner. A meter reads it instantly, and we carry replacements, including for the Kozy Heat and other propane-country units we service.
