My gas fireplace pilot is lit but the main burner won't come on — what's wrong?

In storm-rebuilt homes we often see brand-new gas units where a dead burner is a fresh wiring or switch issue; in the surviving Grovemont-era houses it's usually a thermopile aged by the damp valley. Either leaves the pilot lit and the burner cold, and both are quick, low-cost fixes.

In a new unit, a pilot that won't light the burner usually points to a control fault — a factory wire not fully seated, a switch, a remote receiver. Damp oxidizes the switch contacts and wire terminals that carry the burner signal, so a corroded connection can mimic a failed sensor. Swannanoa sits on the natural-gas main, so fuel supply is rarely the issue — the gas is there, the valve just isn't being told to open. In the Bee Tree and Grovemont homes still drying out from the storm, we pay particular attention to any connection that may have sat damp, since a green-tinged terminal will fail the burner long after the wood and drywall have dried.
