My gas fireplace pilot is lit but the main burner won't come on — what's wrong?
Around Sylva two things converge: student and rental units near WCU that get heavy, inconsistent use, and Tuckasegee river-valley moisture that rusts contacts fast. So a pilot that lights but won't fire the burner is often a corroded switch or wire connection breaking the millivolt signal, or a thermopile worn from hard use. Both are inexpensive fixes.
Rental use and river damp, together
Cullowhee and Dillsboro rentals see fireplaces run hard by tenants and maintained loosely between them, which ages the thermopile faster than an owner-occupied home. On top of that, cold-air drainage and river moisture off the Tuckasegee degrade flue liners and rust dampers — and that same damp works on the low-voltage circuit. The main burner opens on only a few hundred millivolts, so an oxidized spade connector or a corroded wall switch can block it while the pilot burns on undisturbed. We check the sensor and every contact in the path rather than guessing from the symptom alone.

Dillsboro's older homes carry aging masonry chimneys, so if yours is a log set in an original firebox rather than a sealed insert, we'll also confirm the gas connection hasn't been strained. Sylva is mixed-fuel — some homes on the main, some on propane — and on propane we check the regulator and tank, since low LP pressure mimics a burner fault. Around Cullowhee and Balsam we also see units shut off through a long holiday break and then relit cold, which is exactly when a marginal thermopile finally quits and a dust-choked burner refuses to carry the flame.
